(Frequently Asked Questions)

Are any of the animals you use in your programs dangerous?

No.  All the animals we use are captive born or captive raised.  This means that they are used to people and do not see us as a threat.  Some animals such as the tarantulas & scorpions are not touched by the audience ~ but close looks are given.

Are you insured?

Yes.  Riverside Reptiles is fully insured.

What about Salmonella?

Salmonellosis (sal-mohn-el-OH-sis) is a bacterial disease caused by the bacterium, Salmonella.  Animals can carry Salmonella and pass it in their feces (stool).  Salmonella is most abundant in filthy animal enclosures.  At Riverside Reptiles we pride ourselves in keeping our animals in immaculate conditions.  The enclosures are cleaned and spot checked on a daily basis to ensure the health and well being of our animals.  As a precautionary measure here are a couple basic rules to follow when touching or handling reptiles:

  • Please do not eat while the show is in progress and keep your hands away from your mouth.
  • Wash your hands when the show has ended.

What can I do to make it easier for the presenter?

  • When returning the contract please include detailed directions to the location of the program.  Please leave or reserve a parking space in close proximity to the location of the program.
  • Please let the children know ahead of time that the animals do best with a quiet crowd that remains seated.  Anything the adults can do to help assist with this is greatly appreciated.

Do I have to touch that animal?

Of course not! We will not make you touch any animal that you do not wish to touch.  But we do hope you will try and have an open mind when meeting these animals.  So, please try and put on a brave face and refrain from using unkind words when you see an animal you dislike.  Hopefully, once you learn more about that animal you may just change your mind.

Can you bring an alligator?

Sorry I can't.  Crocodilians are illegal to own in the state of Connecticut.

Can you do the programs outside?

Yes, as long as the temperature is in the mid-seventies.  Here are couple things to have in mind if you're planning an outside party:

  • If the audience does not want to sit on grass, you can use an old blanket or chairs.
  • Lizards love direct sun ~ but most humans do not.  So, shaded areas work best.
  • Have the program away from buggy areas.  Bug spray can hurt or even kill some of our animals.  If anyone is wearing bug spray they will not be able to touch or handle the animals.

Do you call to confirm the program(s)?

No, we do not call to confirm the program date.  We will call if there is the potential for bad weather and we might need to make plans for rescheduling.  However, for those of you that would like to call and confirm your program date, please feel free.
